What is an MCC in SMS?
MCC stands for Mobile Country Code.
It is a 3 digit code that uniquely identifies the location of a Mobile Network Operator (MNO).
This has particular relevance if a mobile phone is roaming and is away from its home network.
The mobile country code is one the pieces of information retrieved if an HLR lookup is conducted on a mobile phone number (MSISDN).
The first digit of the number always refers to the continent, not that 1 and 8 are not used.
0: Test networks
2: Europe
3: North America and the Caribbean
4: Asia and the Middle East
5: Oceania
6: Africa
7: South and Central America
9: Worldwide (Satellite, Antarctica)
The MCC number is used in conjunction with an MNC (Mobile Network Code) to identify a Mobile Network Operator. This combination is known as an ‘MCC/MNC tuple’.
