(This is when messages are joined together to appear on the phone as one long text.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the first text was sent back in 1992 by Vodafone engineer Neil Papworth, SMS wasn\u2019t intended to be a service that billions of people worldwide would use every day to send countless texts to family and friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was originally used as a way that telecoms engineers could use spare network capacity to communicate at almost no cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/test.thesmsworks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/neil-papworth.jpeg\" alt=\"neil papworth Vodafone engineer\" class=\"wp-image-135\" width=\"381\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesmsworks.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/neil-papworth.jpeg 450w, https:\/\/thesmsworks.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/neil-papworth-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/thesmsworks.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/neil-papworth-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 381px) 100vw, 381px\" \/><figcaption>Neil Papworth was a young Vodafone engineer when he sent the first SMS in 1992<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fast forward to 2012 and a staggering 151 billion texts were being sent annually in the UK alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since those heady days,&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thesmsworks.co.uk\/p2p-sms\">P2P SMS<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;volumes have been in steep decline as other&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thesmsworks.co.uk\/OTT-messaging-apps\">OTT messaging apps<\/a>&nbsp;with much richer features have taken over.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though SMS is incredibly basic, offering just 160 plain text characters, it still shows no signs of being killed off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SMS remains the only messaging option where you don\u2019t need to install an app and agree which one you&#8217;re going to use. As long as you have someone\u2019s mobile number, you can send them a text.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/test.thesmsworks.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/whatsapp-and-messenger-logo-small.jpg\" alt=\"whatsapp and messenger logo\" class=\"wp-image-133\" width=\"454\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesmsworks.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/whatsapp-and-messenger-logo-small.jpg 701w, https:\/\/thesmsworks.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/whatsapp-and-messenger-logo-small-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><figcaption>Unlike WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, SMS can be sent to any mobile number<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s still a unique benefit that SMS has over all the other messaging apps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the difference between SMS and MMS?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MMS stands for Multimedia Messaging Service<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While SMS is 160 plain text characters, MMS allows you to send images, video, audio and other file types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With MMS there is no restriction on the number of characters used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The rise of Business SMS<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As the volume of person to person to person texts drops, we\u2019re witnessing a sharp rise in the volume of texts being sent by businesses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historically, these have typically been marketing texts. It wasn\u2019t &nbsp;long ago that we were all being bombarded by spam from dubious financial services and accident claims companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These days SMS is being used much more to send&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thesmsworks.co.uk\/transactional-sms\">transactional texts<\/a><\/strong>.
