What is tier 1 SMS & what does it mean?<\/h1>\n\n

A tier 1 SMS aggregator connects directly to\u00a0mobile phone networks for delivery of all their SMS traffic.<\/p>\n\n

They don\u2019t use grey or blended SMS routes for sending any of their standard or binary SMS<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Tier 1 SMS simply means that the\u00a0SMS aggregator<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is one step (or tier) down from the mobile network. There is no further transfer of data with other third parties.<\/p>\n\n

It’s\u00a0is the most reliable type of business SMS available to companies who use it as part of their customer communication.<\/p>\n\n

The reason why it\u2019s important to only use a tier one aggregator is that other tier 2 SMS providers use\u00a0grey routes<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0which suffer from poor reliability.<\/p>\n\n

Grey SMS routes often lack the full set of features that tier one SMS providers offer.<\/p>\n\n

For example, SMS sent through grey routes\u00a0can be delayed<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0or simply fail to arrive at all. It\u2019s also likely that you\u2019ll be unable to set the\u00a0sender ID<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and delivery reports<\/a><\/strong> are often missing or incomplete.<\/p>\n\n

So what might appear to be a lower cost option, actually creates major issues.<\/p>\n\n

Using tier 1\u00a0aggregators is the only sensible choice.<\/p>\n\n

How can I tell if SMS is sent using tier one routes?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

The first clue is the cost that you\u2019re paying per text. If you\u2019re quoted a price that\u2019s way lower than other providers, then that’s a big red flag.<\/p>\n\n

Providers that don\u2019t use tier 1 pay much less per text so are able to offer very low prices. This may seem attractive but it\u2019s always bad value.<\/p>\n\n

Tier 1 SMS provides consistently fast delivery, normally within a few seconds. Delivery reports will be complete and unambiguous. You\u2019ll be able to set the sender ID (as long as the relevant country permits this.)<\/p>\n\n

SMS sent through tier one routes will also have sufficient throughput capacity for all your SMS traffic, which means you won\u2019t experience any delay with message\u00a0delivery.<\/p>\n\n

Tier one SMS offer truly global reach, with no countries having patchy or incomplete coverage. Using tier one for your SMS means you won\u2019t have to find multiple vendors to cover the countries that you need to deliver in.<\/p>\n\n

Tier 1 SMS provides highest level of data security<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Although\u00a0SMS itself is not encrypted<\/a><\/strong>, it\u2019s important that you have as much visibility as possible on who is handling your customers\u2019 sensitive and valuable personal data.<\/p>\n\n

With tier 1 SMS you can be confident that the only people who have access to the data are the SMS provider, the tier one aggregator and the networks themselves.<\/p>\n\n

Tier 2 SMS routes allow customer data to be passed to an unknown number of third parties. For companies operating under GDPR, this could represent a significant data security risk.<\/p>\n\n

How many tier 1 SMS providers are there?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

The simple answer is that it\u2019s difficult to tell. In the past few years there have been so many acquisitions and mergers that the whole SMS landscape is changing very quickly.<\/p>\n\n

Certainly in the UK, almost all tier one SMS providers have either been purchased or merged with other, often US based companies.<\/p>\n\n
